In PCB routing, right-angle (90°) or acute-angle traces are generally prohibited for the following reasons:

1 Signal Integrity Problems

Sharp corners cause impedance discontinuities, which can result in signal reflection and loss, especially in high-frequency circuits.

2 Electromagnetic Interference (EMI)

Right angles concentrate electric and magnetic fields, increasing radiation and EMI issues.

3 Manufacturing Process Issues

During PCB etching, sharp corners can form “acid traps,” where the etchant accumulates, leading to over-etching or even broken traces.

4 Mechanical Reliability

Corners create stress concentration points, which can easily lead to cracks during thermal expansion or mechanical stress.

5 Current Density Problems

In high-current traces, current tends to concentrate at sharp corners, which may cause localized overheating.

Best Practice: Replace right-angle bends with 45° angles or arc-shaped routing to ensure better signal quality, EMI performance, and manufacturing reliability.
