In PCB routing, right-angle (90°) or acute-angle traces are generally prohibited for the following reasons:
1 Signal Integrity Problems
Sharp corners cause impedance discontinuities, which can result in signal reflection and loss, especially in high-frequency circuits.2 Electromagnetic Interference (EMI)
Right angles concentrate electric and magnetic fields, increasing radiation and EMI issues.3 Manufacturing Process Issues
During PCB etching, sharp corners can form “acid traps,” where the etchant accumulates, leading to over-etching or even broken traces.4 Mechanical Reliability
Corners create stress concentration points, which can easily lead to cracks during thermal expansion or mechanical stress.5 Current Density Problems
In high-current traces, current tends to concentrate at sharp corners, which may cause localized overheating.Best Practice: Replace right-angle bends with 45° angles or arc-shaped routing to ensure better signal quality, EMI performance, and manufacturing reliability.
